Pick plastic plain or decorative containers for plants that like moist soil, such as basil (pictured here), mint and lemon balm. Porous containers (clay, whiskey barrels) are better suited for those that prefer drier to drought dry conditions, such as lavender and rosemary.

The container growing market has been growing as gardening customers learn the benefits of growing their own vegetables and that space is not a limiting factor. Vegetables taste much better and are healthier when eaten fresh from the garden. Container gardening gives the option of gardening anywhere, including an apartment balcony. The container gardener has complete control of the soil, water and sun/shade. It is easier to spot insects and disease at eye level, and there are fewer weeds, which means there’s no need to bend down to weed.
Supplies: containers, new potting soil, seeds or plants and a water source.
